02 Mar Saving Lives at Supervised Consumption Sites
The Consumption and Treatment Services location in Niagara may have to close because a school is opening close to the site. Evidence shows that consumption sites save lives, including 1,500 in Niagara since it opening in 2018. Recent provincial policy has mandated that a CTE can’t be near a school even if it is already in the location. It also can’t relocate so the Niagara CTE will have to close it’s doors.
Services that are available include:
- Supervised consumption (injection, intra-nasal and oral consumption)
- A judgment-free space with supportive staff, including Harm Reduction Workers, Staff with Lived or Living Experience and Paramedics.
- Wound Recognition Program
- Paramedics provide overdose prevention and intervention (i.e. use of oxygen and naloxone)
- Weekly Groups (Women’s Group, Drop-In Group)
