For years, Nicole Regher lived fear of her abusive husband. When they were dating Nicole thought her boyfriend kept close track of her because he cared. Almost as soon as they were married he became violent. Nicole escaped her marriage and now helps women like her at Gillian’s Place, a shelter for abused women in Niagara where she is Director of Development & Violence Prevention Programs. https://gilliansplace.com.
The stark reality of violence against women in Canada:
160 women were killed by violence in Canada in 2020. The increase from 2019 is largely due to lockdowns during the COVID 19 pandemic when abusive spouses were often at home full time.
67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse.
Indigenous women are killed at six times the rate of non-Indigenous women.
